Set at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains, this residence is conceived around a sheltered courtyard that brings daylight into the heart of the home while offering relief from the desert heat. Across its 0.53-acre site, the design balances openness to the mountain landscape with a more intimate sense of enclosure.
The exterior is deliberately restrained, allowing the textures of planting and the changing light across the mountains to give the setting its richness. Light and dark woods introduce warmth and measured contrast, lending depth to a quiet material palette without competing with the landscape.
The courtyard forms the spatial center of the 4,700-square-foot home. Here, shade, planting, and daylight shape an outdoor room that feels protected yet connected to the sky. The surrounding interiors draw on this balance, opening toward both the garden and the mountain views while preserving places for privacy and retreat.
Currently in design, Santa Rosa Courtyard House explores how a generous desert home can retain a sense of intimacy, with architecture, interiors, and landscape conceived as a continuous experience.
